How do I do this?

So, I wanted to make a cutter with the outline of a paw print cutting then the inside solid to press into the paw showing the paw pads. I thought I understood how but I either end up with cutters for the pads (inside bean bits) or I end up with a circle outline or weird stuff. Can someone show me an image of how something like this should be formatted to make it correctly?

OK, thought I could post 2 images showing my design and another showing what I end up with but can only post one image so here is the designs I have tried.

OK, figured it out. I was correct with the top left image but the outline needed to b thicker. All good now but figured I would leave this here in case it helps someone else out.
