Polygon Is Self Intersecting

Hi there! I am trying to print out imprint cutters but I often run into the message:

Error in getCutterMesh: Polygon is Self Intersecting!

What does this mean and how can I fix it? I am trying to make cookie cutters as Christmas gifts, but keep running into this problem with all kinds of different shapes.
